A Publication with Purpose

the collective x MISSION

We are a fashion publication that aims to develop the narrative experiences of oppressed and disregarded populations. Through the creative collaboration of Cornell University students, Collective X magazine undermines the persistent exclusion of diverse individuals within creative fields, while testing artistic boundaries as a means of self-exploration. Popular publications continue to lack sustained diversity at the levels of race, body type, varying abled capacities, age, gender, and sexuality; We choose to construct our own stories. With a focus on the intersection of race & ethnicity with both visible and non-visible identifiers alike, Collective X magazine uses fashion to foster empowerment and community through artistic exploration.

Our Teams

Creative

The creative team develops all graphics and related materials for promotion and distribution. Our Creative Director plans photoshoot concepts, who we work closely with to develop layout and arrangement. Our tasks also include making quartercards, logos, icons, branding, and improving website presentation. We work to present a visually cohesive magazine at the end of each semester. If you're interested in joining our creative team, email us for more info on how to join.

Photography

The photography team consists of our talented photographers. The goal of the photographers is to provide accurate and uplifting representation of the narratives we will be focusing on. Photographers are expected to commit to at least one shoot per issue; usually taking about 1-3 hours on a scheduled weekend.

BEAUTY

The beauty team is in charge of makeup and hairstyling of the models prior to shoots. By working with the creative team, the two teams conceptualize the layouts and aesthetics of the shoots to developing a cohesive theme that best compliments and showcases the message of the literature piece. Beauty team members are expected to attend shoots as well as meetings prior to collaborate on ideas and mood boards.

Styling

The style team is in charge of fashion styling of the models prior to shoots. By working with the creative team, the two teams conceptualize the layouts and aesthetics of the shoots to developing a cohesive theme that best compliments and showcases the message of the literature piece. This will involve mood boards, post-shoot fittings, and cross-collaboration with other subteams (namely Beauty and Creative)

Programming

Our programming team works to execute events like the magazine release parties, Gbody meetings, and community events aligned to our mission. This includes communicating with event venues, coordinating shoot locations, decorating gatherings, and ensuring our events have food. Programming also guides club collaborations with community orgs that align with our mission.

PR & Marketing

Our Marketing and PR team works to ensure maximum circulation of the magazine and awareness of our events and other activities. This includes managing the social media accounts, community outreach, and promotional ideas for. This team also supports the programming team with planning event aesthetics and works with 3rd party advertisers to bring revenue to the magazine.

EDITORIAL

The editorial team organizes and edits all written content that is under the Collective X umbrella. This includes both the magazine’s print issues as well as its online blog, Column X. Our team works to ensure all written content aligns seamlessly with each issue’s theme and the magazine’s overarching mission of inclusivity. Each semester, we accept submissions from the Cornell community centered around a broad theme while also managing and contributing unique, thoughtful content for our website.
